Travel Day!!!! I said goodbye to Monica and my wonderful host family from Celaya in the morning. It was a three and a half hour bus ride, and I sat next to Gabbie. Once we arrived in the new city, we had internal time. When it was finally time to go home, my host family didn't show up. I was originally supposed to be hosted with Carmen and Romane, but that family couldn't host three girls. It was a huge miscommunication and long story short, we needed to find a new host family. Lorena, the PR, found Romane and I a new host family quickly. We waited for two hours to figure all this out. Staff allocation brought us to their house, but we had the wrong address. The house was in a gated community that was guarded by many police officers. It took us 30 minutes to get through the gate. When we finally arrived, I felt a huge relief because the family was absolutely awesome!! They have two twin girls who are 19, two cats, and two dogs. Their dad is an alumni that traveled in 1988. He was in the first cast that traveled to the Soviet Union. We went out for Tacos al Pastor the first night, and I truly fell in love with this family. I wish I could spend my entire day with them instead of just the nights.
4-9-19 Tuesday
Today a group of second semesters worked at a coffee shop all day. We were preparing for the Hunger Banquet that is happening in Metepec, Mexico. Since I am an Education Intern, I get to help set up workshops for the cast. I have done a lot of public speaking, facilitation, and organization. This internship is not what I expected, but I am trying to take initiative and get the most out of it. The biggest lesson that I have learned in my entire life is INITIATIVE. Great things happen when I apply myself 100%. Grace and I booked the plane tickets from Copenhagen to Split. I am officially going to Croatia!! I am so excited!!! Today was a workday that I really needed to get all my things organized and done. When the cast got back from CA, I facilitated a workshop about Love Languages. This is a topic that I love to share with people, and it was interesting to learn how everyone in the cast feels appreciated the most. At night, Tanya, Sofi, Romane, and I worked out together. I love my host sisters!!!! Tanya helped Romane and I book our Airbnb in Croatia!! We officially have a place to stay as well. Celia chopped up many fruits and vegetables for out salad. Having healthy options for even one night made a huge impact on how healthy I felt.
4-10-19 Wednesday
Private Show Day!!! The staff had to unload the truck at midnight and start setting up early. The cast arrived to the show venue, and immediately started signouts. Sara and I went to Starbucks and worked on The Hunger Banquet. I also decided to do an intern project in Mexico City. I am going to interview some cast members about their experiences in UWP. The theme of the week is "Inspiration," and my project will tie into that nicely. As for the show... we had a rough set up, rehearsal, and show. I got really overheated and nauseated by the end of the show. Alicen gave me a cooling towel and an Electrolit. After the show, the cast rushed to the busses. Alex picked us up and he told us a story of how he got kidnapped in Mexico. We went to be pretty early.
4-11-19 Thursday
Today I went to two of the nicest universities in all of Mexico, Anahuac and Ibero. It was an awesome experience to see what it's like for privileged students in Mexico to get an education. I would almost want to attend these schools because they are extremely modern. We spent the day mingling with students and encouraging them to travel in Up with People. We also had three acoustic performances around the university. The bus rides in Mexico make me highly nauseous, so I had some troubles throughout the day. Overall, it was a really nice day where I could hang out with my closest friends with music.
4-12-19 Friday
Today I had a community action project at Horminga Park. The cast split up into different tasks like painting, cleaning, and planting trees. I finally got to paint this semester and interact with some awesome people. The place had a breathtaking view of Mexican houses stacked together. The cast got to participate in a tree ceremony. We painted the wall orange, and then started to paint a mural as well. It was a wonderful Mexican CA day, and I get very sunburned. Then we went to full cast party sponsored by Lupita! We got to have a few drinks and just totally relax. It was really nice to feel normal, and party with my closest friends. There was a live band, tacos, drinks, and dancing!!! This made me really excited for Croatia because I am going with a really fun group of people.
4-13-19 Saturday
This show day was the best one that I have had this semester. It was all because of the mindset and attitude that I chose. I found myself reflecting in immense gratitude for the challenges I've faced, the people around me, and the experience I've had. I only have 10 more shows left in Up with People, and I need to appreciate the fact that I have seen both worlds of production. Paola, Aiden, Ana, Maryfer, and Sydney all came to this show. It made me nostalgic and excited to perform. I also got to sing Roller Coaster for the first time in a real show. I cried in my performance on stage because the message of that song hit me really hard in the moment. My host family came as well, and they were so enthusiastic about the show. It was refreshing.
4-14-19 Sunday
Host Family Day!!!! Romane and I slept in really late to catch up on sleep. Then we did our laundry, called home, journaled, and relaxed a little bit. Alex made a delicious Mexican dish for breakfast called Pastel Azteca. We all sat outside while eating and chatting. Then we picked up Tanya and drove to Mexico City. I was really excited to finally see downtown. Our host family gave us a tour of The Palace of Fine Arts, The sinking Cathedral, The Opera House, The French Post Office, and the markets in the streets. We walked around and saw aztec dancers. Romane paid for a ritual to cleanse her soul with the Aztec traditions. I was not about to do that... Then we came home and had dinner with Celia. We ate outside, and it was surprisingly cold in Mexico. Once the sun goes down, so does the temperature. I have really enjoyed this family, and I am going to be really sad when we have to leave tomorrow.
